Fire prevention
Fire inspections
The Fire Prevention Bureau conducts inspections of commercial buildings, multi-family housing, schools, and public assembly spaces to ensure compliance with fire codes. Inspections are conducted on a regular cycle and in response to complaints.
Plan review
All new construction and major renovation projects require fire prevention plan review. The Bureau reviews plans for fire protection systems, means of egress, fire alarm systems, and code compliance.
Fire investigation
Trained fire investigators determine the origin and cause of fires. Investigations are conducted in coordination with law enforcement when arson or criminal activity is suspected.
Smoke detectors and CO alarms
Wisconsin law requires working smoke detectors on every level of a home and outside each sleeping area. Carbon monoxide detectors are required in all residential buildings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.
