Zoning and land use

Zoning districts

The City of Janesville is divided into zoning districts that regulate land use, building height, lot coverage, setbacks, and density. The zoning code is part of the Janesville Municipal Code and is available on Municode.

Zoning applications

Applications for rezoning, conditional use permits, variances, and site plan review are submitted to the Planning division. The Plan Commission reviews most applications and makes recommendations to the City Council.

Comprehensive Plan 2040

The Comprehensive Plan 2040 guides land use decisions, development patterns, transportation, housing, economic development, and community facilities. The plan is updated periodically with public input.
